Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP)

Through our Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) program we empower and assist Medicare
beneficiaries, their families, and caregivers to prevent, detect, and report health care
fraud, errors, and abuse through outreach, counseling, and education. SMPs are grant-funded
projects of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S.
Administration for Community Living (ACL).

State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP)

Our SHIP program is Alabama’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program. Our SHIP counselor
and volunteers are committed to helping you make informed choices regarding your Medicare

Empowering seniors, caregivers, and communities to detect and report
scams.

Medicare fraud, identity theft, and sophisticated financial scams target older adults
every day. Recognizing these threats is the first step in stopping them. The Middle
Alabama Area Agency on Aging (M4A) hosts its Annual Community Fraud Summit across our
5-county region, bringing educational, resource-packed events directly to every county we
serve each year.

What to Expect

  • Expert Guest Speakers: Hear directly from fraud prevention
authorities, including the Alabama Securities Commission (ASC) and Senior Medicare
Patrol (SMP). Learn to spot recent scam trends and protect your personal information.
  • Local Vendor Resources: Connect face-to-face with local community
partners, healthcare providers, and caregiver support networks.
  • Actionable Strategies: Learn concrete steps to report fraud safely and
effectively if you or a loved one is targeted.
  • Community & Fellowship: Enjoy a free lunch, participate in door
prize drawings, and connect with neighbors.

We partner with local venues, churches, and community centers to ensure these events are
